Like anywhere else in the world, but perhaps most apt on The Strip, the success of any show depends, on a large part, on location, location, location. Of course, it helps if you’ve got backers, and a really great production, but for the most part, it’s all perception. . For how else would you explain the success of the recently-opened show “Absinthe,” which has been drawing raves from just about everyone in town?
It’s funny, yes; and definitely an idea whose time has come – but what appears to be an overnight sensation, is actually a show that was about 5 years in the making. Also, this is a lesser-known fact about the show, but this made a Vegas play four years ago, as “The Gazillionaire Show,” albeit on a much smaller scale, budget and venue – they played two nights at the Aruba Hotel in North Las Vegas. Back then, it was just “The Gazillionaire, with his assistant, Penny,” plus a band; and the tickets were $20. Fast forward to 2011 – add a couple more acts, throw-in (what’s believed to be) a century-old tent, and park it in a major Strip resort – and you’ve got the recipe for success and the license to charge $69 per head. Oh, okay, let’s not forget the producers and those all-important investors.
