Plaza's
Downtown Vibe at The Dome
When your Las Vegas address is One Main Street,
you had better stand tall amongst your peers. The Plaza Hotel and
Casino certainly does, literally towering over its downtown Fremont
Street neighbors for over 36 years. Now theoretically, big things
should come out of big buildings, and the Plaza wants that theory
to hold true – but they don’t merely aspire to just
be big, they want to be huge.
“We are very determined about the direction
that we are going. We are remodeling and enhancing our look.”
said Scotty Jones from the Plaza’s Marketing Department. He
adds, “Now, and right around the corner, we have some very
exciting things to unveil down here. Onward and upward.”
All of downtown Las Vegas is a-changin’ and
if you haven’t checked it out lately, you need to. Venture
out from the Strip, Summerlin and Green Valley and you will find
out all that downtown has to offer. There is a buzz down there,
almost like they have a secret and can’t wait to share it.
I dare you to not have a good time.
The recent reinventing of downtown has been championed
by Mayor Oscar Goodman who believes in, and often frequents events
and venues downtown. The Fremont Street shops, bars and restaurants
share the Mayor’s dream and are constantly reminded of it
since all they have to do is look around to see all the major renovations
that the anchoring hotel-casinos have, or are going through.
The Plaza is one such hotel that sees that bright
future and is reinvesting in themselves. Established in 1971 as
the Union Plaza, as reference to the Union Pacific Railroad that
originally stood at the site, the hotel was the first to employ
women-dealers downtown and that progressiveness continues today.
Following along that advanced thinking, the Plaza
has just opened Vegas’ only true ultra sports lounge called
The Dome. This football-junkie’s dream boasts 17 big-screen
TVs, huge, comfortable booths, a live satellite betting station,
literally steps away; great beer specials and an incomparable view
of Fremont Street. Freddie Maatouk, VP of Casino Marketing for the
Plaza says it best, “You know you can’t beat it, so
be a part of it.”
It’s convenient. Even though it’s fairly
common to be able to gamble within a few feet into a casino, I don’t
know of many like the Plaza where one can try the slots, hit the
tables and grab a quick bite in the food court without having to
trek through the entire casino. Seattle’s Best, Mc-Donald’s,
Subway, or a slice of pizza are all available within seconds of
entering from the sidewalk of Fremont and Main. The Lucky 7’s
buffet is open daily from 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. with no breaks
in between break- fast, lunch and dinner so there’s no down
time. Valet and parking at the Plaza is a breeze.
It’s comfortable. With over 1,000 rooms from
suites to singles, the Plaza’s reasonably priced rooms are
an incredible value. Throw in a rooftop pool, beauty salon, wedding
chapel, 22,000 square feet of convention and banquet facilities
and wireless Internet access and you have it all at the Plaza.
The Casino. Being voted “Best Place for Blackjack”
by the Las Vegas Review-Journal this year is quite an honor, since
basically every casino in town has tables where eights and aces
should be split. The only downtown hotel to have live bingo, the
80,000 square foot casino floor is spacious enough and yet small
enough to not get lost in. Table games include a large live Poker
Room, Pai Gow Poker, Mini-Baccarat, Let it Ride and a Keno lounge.
The recently renovated sports book still is the
only book in town that has a nickel line (meaning -105 instead of
-110) for NFL games every day. The parlay cards feature some of
the best odds in the city (1/2 point card where 5-for-5 pays 27-for-1).
If all this isn’t enough, Jazz violinist
Michael Ward plays the casino floor and beginning October, Viva
Las Vegas will grace the exquisite Plaza showroom.
These days, downtown is certainly an exciting place
to be. The Plaza is certainly doing its part to make sure that for
years to come, downtown will be a must-stop for tourists and locals
alike. Come on down and experience vintage Vegas that is now sporting
a modern flair, you won’t be disappointed!
When visiting or staying at the Plaza, make sure
to pick up a copy of Today in Las Vegas Magazine on site or in-room.
